DNLA Media Server Configurations

Fancy name huh? Well don’t let the lingo confuse you.

Here at the house I have set up a DNLA server. Put simply,  this allows the family to watch a library of different digital media (Movies,Tv Shows,Music,Etc) from just about anywhere. Think Netflix with your own library! When done properly everyone can watch the same movie at the same time from anything from a Smart TV,Blu-Ray,iPad,iPhone, well you get the idea. Sound cool? It is.

Disclaimer: This system is using an all Apple system. This in theory will work with pc’s as well but I haven’t personally done it.

Ready to get started?

Supply List:

Computer
Serviio Software
Media Connect app
Network connections
Digital Media

Step 1: Connectivity

Everything needs to be networked together in order to work. My system is operating through an Apple Airport Extreme. Every computer, TV, blu-ray player has a wired connection into the Airport. All mobile devices (iPhones,iPads, etc) are connected through the wireless on the Airport as well.

Step 2: Source Media

This is what you want to be in your library. This can be anything from home movies you’ve made to DVD rips to music files. This media must be stored on a computer’s hard-drive. Our system is stored on a large usb external hard-drive to make sure everything stays separate from the computer files themselves.

Step 3: Host server configurations

Since this is a Mac hosted system, we use an application called “Serviio Media Server”. This app can be downloaded freely from the web. Once downloaded and installed setting can be configured and run. You can set different profiles up based on the different playback devices you have. Set bound IP to “auto” and make sure you local media path is the location of you media library.

Step 4: Playback device set up

When the Serviio Server is set up and running you will see your sever start to appear on your devices.

On blu-ray players you can see the Serviio icon appear on the home menus of the player or in the network settings.

On smart TVs you can go to the network or media tabs and locate your Serviio library.

In iOS devices I use the free app “MediaConnect”. When opened this app loads all the servers on the wifi network including Serviio, where you can navigate to your media.

Step 5: Enjoy

Watch listen and enjoy your media from anywhere in the house!
